Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Q&A
What is da Vinci robotic surgery?
The da Vinci robotic surgery system is a state-of-the-art approach to surgery that uses smaller incisions, smaller instruments, and enhanced visualization to reduce stress and trauma during an operation.
Traditional open surgery requires that the surgeon cut through large swathes of skin and muscle to visualize and repair organs. With da Vinci robotic surgery, your provider only needs to make a few small incisions through which they insert a camera and tiny, flexible surgical instruments.
The da Vinci robotic system is much less invasive than both traditional open surgery and earlier versions of laparoscopic surgery due to the small size of the instruments and enhanced visualization.
How does the da Vinci robotic surgery system work?
The da Vinci system consists of a magnified, 3-D screen and an operating console with controls that your provider uses to manipulate the surgical tools.
Your provider makes no more than five incisions, each measuring just 2 inches. Through one incision, they thread a tiny camera that sends a magnified, 3-D full-color image to the monitor. Through the other incisions, they insert highly flexible, tiny surgical tools that they control from the console.
Your provider watches the operation on the magnified, high-resolution screen, which gives them a much more complete visualization of the operating area than traditional laparoscopy or open surgery.
The da Vinci surgical tools are much smaller, more precise, and more flexible than manual instruments. Because your provider never touches them directly, they can make tiny movements that minimize trauma and stress to surrounding tissues.
What kinds of procedures are appropriate for da Vinci surgery?
Whenever possible, Transform Women’s Care recommends da Vinci surgery for gynecological procedures. You may choose da Vinci if you need:
- Myomectomy
- Pelvic organ prolapse repair
- Hysterectomy
- Endometrial resection
- Tumor removal
They may also recommend da Vinci if you have adhesions in your pelvic area that cause pain.
What are the benefits of da Vinci robotic surgery?
The small size of the incisions and the precision of the tiny surgical instruments make da Vinci robotic surgery far less traumatic than previous approaches. You can expect benefits such as:
- Less bleeding
- Less postoperative pain
- Faster recovery
- Smaller scars
